What does Seitan mean and where does it come from?
Seitan comes from the Japanese “sei” – which means “to be, become, made of” and “tan” as in tanpaku which is “protein”. Loosely translated “made of proteins”. More than 1,000 years ago, seitan was prepared in China and Japan by Zen Buddhists as a substitute for meat or fish. Seitan is a protein-rich product usually made from wheat or spelled flour or wheat or spelled proteins. Seitan is packed with proteins from wheat or spelt. Bertyn's seitan is organic, or in other words, made from organic ingredients.
